10 Reasons to Visit Santa Teresa, Costa Rica

November 4, 2014 //  by Alana Roach//  Leave a Comment

All photography is done by Lance Laurence photography: lancelaurence.com / Facebook.com/lancelaurencephoto /instagram.com/lancelaurencephoto

I discovered the beach of Santa Teresa, CR through word of mouth while on vacation in March from a backpacker in Monte Zuma. If we never had run into this person we would have been headed in another direction on our adventures and I am so glad that we ended up here instead. Little did I know, many others have discovered Santa Teresa and it has even been featured as a top 10 destination by Trip Advisor within the past 5 years. It is known to have attracted home owners like Mel Gibson and Gisele Bundchen. I decided to do my first Costa Rica retreat here in January. We actually MOVED HERE four months ago. I hope you get the chance to visit this sacred space.  So whether you are trying to decide on where to fly to next, planning a trip, backpacking through, need some down time, desire healing, or are simply Costa Rica curious, here are the…

Top 10 Reasons to Visit Santa Teresa, Costa Rica

  1. Beautiful Beach : Located on the Nicoya Peninsula, set on the Pacific coastline, the beautiful beach of Playa Santa Teresa is ranked one of the best in the world. 1606416_10103334852760182_3129375104136475082_o
  2. Surf: Santa Teresa has consistent beach breaks all year for all levels of surfers from sunrise to sunset. Trip Advisor has named Santa T one of the top surf spots in the world.

  3. Healing Vortex: What used to be a sleepy beach town that didn’t have any electricity or running water until the 90’s, is now what is trending for tourist from all parts of the globe. Most people came here to surf 10 years ago and then fell head over heels for Santa T, making it a wonderful mix of all cultures. People are drawn here for the beauty and the good vibes that the land and sea has to offer. I am one of many who have come to this sacred space with skin conditions, digestive issues, fertility issues… only to have them clear up within days sometimes. I have read that many years ago, the native Indian’s did sacred rituals on these lands and they are protected, offering a great deal of healing energy. The people that live here keep this land charged by living in such a way that is harmonious with nature. boca
  4. Yoga and Wellness: From Pranamar to Hotel Tropico Latino to Casa Zen, there are yoga studios and retreats centers all along the strip making Santa Teresa a yoga haven for all styles of yogi. Not only that, but there are a plethora of centers for acupuncture, massage, martial arts, surf lessons, meditation, nutritional guidance, and everything in between. medriftwood
  5. Healthy Eats: Most of the fruits and vegetables supplied at the markets are locally grown, making Santa Teresa’s produce rich with flavor and nutrients. When I moved here a few months ago my digestion rapidly improved and a skin condition I had went away (You can read 5 Ways Moving to Costa Rica Improved my Health).mesantaanaangelwing
  6. Simplicity: Since Santa Teresa didn’t really get, “Discovered,” until the 90’s (Seriously picture no refrigerators, lamps, cars, phones, etc) there are still remnants of it’s beautiful simplicity. There are still dirt roads here and no high rise buildings, making the coastline picture perfect, and very tranquil.lancelaurencecoastline
  7. Honey Moon and Destination Weddings. Santa Teresa is sought after by couples these days as it has the feel of a distant island and amazing accommodations spanning the whole area for all budgets. Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen chose to spend their very special honey moon here just a few years ago at the Florblanca Luxury Resort.wedding dress
  8. Animal paradise. Since Santa Teresa is nestled into the rainforest, it is home to many beautiful creatures. Expect to see howler monkeys, parrots, happy beach dogs, wild horses, and much, much more.

  9. Great spot for kids. Thriving with new families, Santa Teresa has such a great community for the little ones. If you are trying to get pregnant, come pay this beach a visit, something is in the air.misszia
  10. Pura Vida. Pura vida is a local saying that means, “Pure life.” Pura vida is freedom and getting in touch with the essence of who we really are. Join me in paradise this January for I Am You and You Are Me: A Costa Rica Yoga Experience. Click here to find out details.

5 Ways To Feel Into What Works For Health

October 19, 2014 //  by Alana Roach//  1 Comment

I was recently approached by someone who was curious about the way our mind and body connect in relation to the food they give it. They, like me, had more than one expectation when, “Going mind/body green.” Expectations can lead to confusion, and I have explored my own questions with vigor and dedication for the past 6 years. Yoga has opened me up to a mind/body/Spirit connection that I had never dreamed possible. Shortly after my first yoga class I stopped eating chicken and beef… why? I simply lost the taste and it felt right. I have been FEELING into what is right ever since and benefiting leaps and bounds. A lot of it, for me, is trial and error. I want to share some of these trials with you. Please know that I am not a doctor, please seek a health professional before trying any of this on your own.

Please remember that these are merely examples of my own experience and I truly believe that everyone is a bit different. I am an advocate of learning how to LISTEN to your body with and open heart and attuning that heart so you can more easily access Self-Love & Acceptance.

5 Ways To Feel Into What Works For Health

1. Trying new things. I had to say it, but if I don’t try it, how do I know if it feels right or not. That could mean that yoga class or 5k marathon you have been putting on the back burner. Typically when I try something knew I reflect for a bit afterwards. I close my eyes and take about 5 or so long inhales and exhales, being mindful of my breath. After I empty my mind, I notice how I feel in that moment. If I feel even a little better than I did when I walked in, I mark it off in the, “Do it again category.”
2. Eating slowly and deliberately. I try to only eat when I am hungry and when I eat slowly I am able to savor the flavor of the food I am eating. I can feel the textures, taste the juices, and I give my body time to fill up! It takes about 20 minutes for our belly to chat with our brain and let it know that it’s full. I eat extra slow these days (Or maybe it feels that way because I am usually the last one to finish).
3. Journaling how you feel after you eat. This can be fun and also a little disheartening. When I started to recognize the patterns in how I felt after I ate certain foods, I realized I had to make major changes in my diet. This also means to recognize how you feel in the morning after you eat that late meal. Timing food can be a big factor in feeling your best. So once again, eat your meal or drink your juice and close your eyes, take a few deep breaths, and say to yourself, “How do I feel in this moment.” With love and kindness, answer HONESTLY (Honesty is the only way this works)… If you feel tired, groggy, grumpy, foggy, upset stomache, bloated, and the like… you may have to reconsider what you are putting in your body.
4. Eating the Ahimsa Way. Ahimsa is a yogic term which means non-violence. This could mean non-violence for you but also non-violence for whatever it is you are consuming. I am not saying to go vegan because again, no two bodies are the same… but I am saying to notice where your energy level is after you eat that farm raised egg, chicken wing, etc. Do you all of a sudden feel angry, sad, etc? The cleaner I started eating, the more sensitive to this I became. Opting for organic whole foods is always a safe bet, but no two people are the same in what they need, breathe/pause, feel into what’s right.
5. Environment. Surrounding myself with positive, uplifting people and seeking out healthy environments (Excluding bars, etc.) helps me stay on track. This becomes easier the healthier one gets. I believe we are all mirrors for one another, and like attracts like. Water will seek water at the same level, so the healthier and whole you get, the more of the same will come to you. So work on yourself, practicing self-compassion, unrelenting forgiveness the whole way. Just be mindful of what or who you put your energy towards or into. Breathe/Pause/Ask!

With much love, light, and honor for your Inner Journey,

Gaining Self Love Through Slowing Down

September 11, 2014 //  by Alana Roach//  1 Comment

Once upon a time I was newly determined. When I first got sober in 2009, I started to live. I not only desired to live a more honest and pure life, but I felt the need to make up for lost time. I don’t think I am alone in this effort as I have talked to newly sober individuals who have felt the same. Relating to you has been such a comfort to me. I can’t thank you enough. 10 years in a malaise of blackouts made life sort of stand still as the days slid together. Time whirled by and all of a sudden I was a 23 years old with the mentality of a 13 year old girl. Those first few months of drying out felt like I was looking in a mirror at a reflection that was totally foreign. I was feeling emotions again. Drinking for me was an escape from emotions, but I was really just shoving them down. The emotions, just like damed water, go no where, they just build & build. Take the drink or drug away and the emotions come gushing out. I had a lot of support & I still do in recovery, but at the end of the day I am still left with me.

Making up for all of this “lost time” was exhausting. I was shorting hours of sleep to make early yoga classes before school. I was taking classes for college 6 days a week, staying after for honors programs and book club, and working 5 to 6 days a week. I was running 10 – 18 miles before working a 6 to 8 hour shift at a restaurant. I was driving all day and eating in my car while drinking copious amounts of caffeine to keep going. I was running around trying to be everything to everyone and yet I was struggling to keep up with my own self-care. Does this sound familiar?

The Universe will always plead with us to slow down and smell the roses. Sometimes it starts with a tap on the shoulder and if that doesn’t get our attention something louder and more palpably alerting will. It could be in the form of a cold or flu. . Did that stop me? No. I am embarrassed to admit this but I have definitely pushed the limits while sick. I didn’t rest unless I couldn’t move. Sometimes it shows up with injury. Did that stop me? Not at first. I went to work with a broken nose once after a soccer game. I thought it meant I was strong. No pain, no gain! Right? Wrong. Thankfully, yoga and meditation have taught me that strength comes through honoring my body, mind, and Spirit. For me, my big wake up call was a car accident. I was running on empty energetically. In retrospect this accident was a few years coming. I felt the exhaustion every step of the way and I still pushed the envelope. The morning of the accident I felt it in my bones that I could use a few more hours of sleep. Totally disregarding the signal my body was sending me, I pushed through it anyway. I woke up at 6am to make my way to the gym and I took a left turn when I clearly shouldn’t have, got hit on the drivers side, my head cracked against the window, car totaled, other car totaled with an injured party and we were both in that ambulance together afraid for our lives. Luckily we would both be ok, but until that moment I could not slow down. Even with a regular meditation practice and a million signs that I should, I was addicted to doing more. I was addicted to filling my day with, “Things,” just so I didn’t have to sit with me.

Laying there in my bed, recovering from the accident for a few weeks allowed for a lot of reflection. I was resting more than I had in years. I realized how precious every moment is. I stumbled upon the quote, “Life is a journey, not a destination,” by Ralph Waldo Emerson. Constantly striving for more while making endless lists and running around to no end was not the answer for me. I had not truly let go. I was still calling the shots. I couldn’t believe it but I finally realized I was not truly happy because I couldn’t sit still with me. The, “Me,” who wasn’t striving for the next goal, or trying to impress you, or looking for attention. When I took away all of those masks, and sat in the presence of my own Self, I realized I had been missing out on a beautiful truth. The truth that, “I am whole without doing anything.” Mind blown. I couldn’t believe it. My first introduction into, “The art of non-doing.”

I found a solution.

1. Saying No. No is a complete sentence. As simple as that sounds, boy was it oh so ever a challenge. I was a people please to the max. I thought I had to be for you to think I had worth. Saying no didn’t always make people happy but I realized I had to take care of myself first, otherwise I was of no use to anyone!
2. Self care!! No matter what! If my mind, body, Spirit connection needs tending to, that is what comes first. I can’t help anyone until I am healthy. Getting enough sleep really helps with this. I get at least 8 a night and yes, sometimes that means I am in bed by 9pm.
3. Focusing on one thing at a time. Having this clear, I would then have a great teacher months later say to me,”Find your purpose and get to it immediately.” What was I waiting for? I ended up having a lot of down time in India just a few months after my car crash and I embarked on what I knew was my dream after my return. Teaching yoga, writing to inspire, and intuitive healing.
4. Listening to my Body. Feeling tired, weak, foggy brained, irritated, sluggish are all signs to slow down, rest more, take a break. Even if it’s retreating for a few deep breaths to become present.
5. Create Space to Restore. working with people can take a lot of energy, even just being in crowded spaces. Make a sacred space that re-fuels you. Giving myself some time to re-boot through naps, energy work, meditation, de-charging can make all of the difference. These are some great ideas for creating a sacred-space.
6. Love, Laughter, Letting- Go. As self-awareness grows with my spiritual practice of choice, I learn to become more loving & accepting of myself. When I become aware that I am falling back into old patterns of “Over-achiever, perfectionist mentality,” I have to laugh at myself, take a deep breath, let go & let Jah.
7.Giving thanks for who I am in this moment.  It takes mental persuasion to bring my loosy goosey attention back to gratitude and self-love. However, the effects are astounding and my whole perspective shifts when I do this. I use positive affirmations & gratitude techniques. I commend myself for a job well done or not done. I honor karma and if I act less than perfect, I forgive myself and try better next time. When I am honoring myself in this way I can better honor you and Gaia.

I am grateful for my, “Get to it” determination today. It is a positive aspect of who I am, but just like anything if it becomes something that starts to burn me out I have to go back to the practices that bring me to the present moment and allow me to slow down. I have to let go a little or a lot. When I do, the Universe holds my intentions close and I am taken care of in more ways than I could have imagined. This has been proven to me time and time again.

So to all of my fellow acheivers out there, just for today, take a few minutes to smell the roses as you walk by them, the most vibrant and rich blooms are surrounding you and you could have missed it. Pause, take a deep breath and say, “There is nothing I have to do, be, or have because I already am.” Remember your Divine nature. You are bountifully amazing just as you are.

Until next time with love and light,
Alana

Season of Change

August 25, 2014 //  by Alana Roach//  1 Comment

Rainy Day Costa Rica www.lancelaurence.com
Rainy Day Costa Rica www.lancelaurence.com

This is the first fall season I will be spending in the tropics for the entire duration.  My body is remembering the excitement of the leaves beginning to turn orange and yellow and the smell of pumpkin spice at coffee shops.  There are seasons in the tropics of Costa Rica as well, just a bit different.  We are coming into “Rainy season.”  Appropriately named because, well… it rains, a lot.  It is only starting to rain here and for the most part, we have been lucky I hear from the locals.  We had one torrential downpour 2 weeks ago and then it’s only been scattered showers since.  I love it when it rains here.  Since our place is only screened in and there are no windows and earth walls, we get to experience the thunder storms with incredible surround sound.  It’s amazing. Rainy season is also known as, “Green season,” also aptly named because everything comes to life here when it rains. The forest is lush with reverent fervor.   There is this magical hummingbird who sips from the blossoms every day, literally drinking in the beauty. Fall is also a great time of reflection as it brings in external and internal changes.  Here are some of the ways I honor the, “Season of Change,” no matter where I am in the world.

  1. Self love.  Change can bring restlessness and irritability, fear and resistance.  Breathing into the moment and going with the cycles of change with self love make change a miraculous unfolding.  Remember, God wouldn’t bring you to it, without bringing you through it.
  2. Pumpkin Spice, Vanilla, Cinnamon, & Nutmeg. I put it in everything and anything. I love adding it to coffee, quinoa/oats, banana mush.  Your favorite fall spices are really good for your system as well, read more on this here.
  3. Pumpkin Seeds. I love roasting pumpkin seeds in the oven and playing around with new healthy treats like this healthy carrot bread. The heat from the oven on those cooler fall days is a nice bonus.
  4. Meditation. Being still through change brings a greater perspective with non-attachment! See what I have to say about meditation here.
  5. In Ayurveda, we suggest cleansing every season and eat foods that are locally grown in that season for optimal health.  See here for suggestions.
  6. Marathons/Triatholons. All of that hard work has paid off and most of you thon-ers are about to run/bike/swim through the finish line. Way to go!
  7. Gratitude. Gratitude has improved the way I live my life in the most profound way.  When we find things to be grateful for, we can know no fear.
  8. Yoga.  Create space in your day for yoga, even if it’s 5 minutes.  Yoga helps you connect with your Divinity. A great reminder that you are eternal and this moment will come and it will go but you remain the mountain through the seasons.
  9. Family time. While being able to sit with you alone is important, the importance of establishing a sense of community is too.  This of course means our roots but also our extended community. We all are so deeply connected. I know this and so I greet you into my family as so many of you have welcomed me into yours.  In my personal journey I am looking to create more space for celebrating togetherness for the sake of being together. Aho.
  10. Staying inspired. What motivates you? What is that one thing you have been thinking about doing all year but haven’t started? Feel blocked? Find someone who has done what you are trying to do, ask them how they did it.  Or start slowly, and ask yourself, “What is the first step of making this become my reality?” For instance, I always wanted to world travel and 5 years ago I realized that in order to get the ball rolling, I should get a passport, even if I did not have an itinerary. Taking that first step opened my creative center and began my initiation into what faith in action really means. Everything fell into place after that, it just took a beginning. If travel is something you have been thinking about doing, but haven’t made the leap, check out my upcoming retreat in Costa Rica! Explore the possibilities!

No matter where you are in the world, you can always stay inspired by fall.  Every fall I am always brought to the song lyric by Bob Dylan, “And the times, they are a’ changing.” Fall, for me represents change with radical acceptance, breathing into the moment, and remember that the only constant is change.

What inspires you in the Fall season?  I’d love to hear you!

Great Tides

Courage has been a repeating theme in my life this year. “Courage,” keeps echoing to me in the core of my soul. To combat fear we must have the courage to love ourselves completely. I am discovering that courage takes on many different forms but it always stays true in the way that I am to trust it with every fiber of my being in times of trial. When faced with decisions, I am always given options, opinions, and ego. The high tide here in the Pacific brings with it great power. It comes closer and closer to you, crashing against the shore, washing with it debris and pulling back into the great mass under the great blue sky. When encountering the ocean’s power, the ego mind says, “I am afraid,” “I am going to fight with it,” “I am going to win,” and, “I am not good enough.” Depending on your level of training you might have the courage to ride the high tide, because you’ve studied it for years, you’ve started from the beginning working with a guide and surfed your way through the tides. Depending on your level of training you might say, “I haven’t studied this tide, perhaps I should start from the beginning and come back with a guide.” Perhaps with your level of training, you go into the high tide and feels it’s majesty halt you before you even get in knee deep and then you are faced with a decision, do I go forward or do I retreat? Which establishes courage? It takes courage to be humble and begin something new. It often takes guides, consistency, and trust. Even when you have the training to surf the high tide you are aware of its unpredictability, and you must stay present, and you are always learning something new about yourself, you are always growing, getting stronger. It’s an impossibility to become complacent in the ocean.

Just like the tides of the ocean, the tides of the mind are ever changing. It takes courage to stay present, to be humble, to respect and accept where you are on the path. To have the courage to be still in moments of flux, to have the courage to flow with change, to have the courage to be open enough to learn from life’s great lessons, and take them in stride. It takes courage to realize the greatness of the ocean, just as it takes courage to realize the Greatness of You. It takes courage to really go for it, whatever that means for you in the moment. Just know to channel your Courage is a great teacher within itself. It could start with a mental exercise that I use all of the time. It’s simple. Whenever your mind starts to run, in yoga we call this the, “Monkey Mind,” direct your mind to the tip of your nose, take a deep breath, and say, “This, I am not.” You might be surprised to find that not identifying with your thoughts can take a lot of courage. I would love to hear your thoughts and experiences with courage. Find the courage to journey with Self. Join me Jan 17-24 in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica for Explorations of Self: A Costa Rica Yoga Experience. Registration is open through October. If you sign up before September 1, receive great savings. I look forward to exploring courage deeper with you on your mats.

The light within me honors and sees the light within you, and in that moment we are one, Namaste.

Yogi Diaries : Entry # 1 “Buenos Dias, Costa Rica!”

August 11, 2014 //  by Alana Roach//  Leave a Comment

8/10/14

The sound of my cat woke me up at 7am this morning and I was grateful to be jostled out of sleep this way.

miyakoport

I slowly open my eyes and blearily looked around, wishing I had my glasses.  I turn my head to see him lying there, comfortable and sound asleep.  I thought to myself, I better not wake him and silently maneuvered the rough sheet off of my sticky body and stepped onto the cool concrete floor.  It’s humid here and the coolness of the concrete against the souls of my feet is so nurturing.  I never realized what a convenience air conditioning was until traveling internationally. However a lot of the locals here have acclimated to the heat, not by choice, but by necessity.  Our neighbors live in a shack with a tin roof and wood boards on the side. That’s not to say other places don’t have AC but we wanted to live simply and get back to our roots.  I make my way slowly around the bedroom to the living area and then into the kitchen with ease, as there are no doors to compete with my flow.

miyako

I found my glasses lying on the wooden table directly next to the patio windows and put them on.  When I open my eyes again and peered through the frames chills ran up and down my spine as I looked out into the world through the large patio doors before me. There are absolutely no glass window panes on either the patio or the windows, and it’s a luxury that we have screens.  Our renter has an open air place above us by choice.  If she wanted to She could get the whole place screened and sealed but something happens to those who stay here it seems.  They seem to want to really connect with their surrounds and tend to become more rhythmic with it.  Every time I travel here I find myself sleeping when the night falls and rising with the sun.  It just works that way.  I really love it this way because you really feel connected to nature.  The smells and the sounds of the outdoors are right there and you are right there with them.   Waving green palm trees greeted me and a small orange butterfly landed on the sliding white gate in front of the screen, plush green trees filled in the background and sun poured through the leaves on to the fresh stream water below it.

butterfly

As I watched the sun perform crystalline dances on the water’s surface I thought to myself, “This must be heaven.”  There is a draping white hammock  affixed to the ceiling inside here and I decided to nestle into it, wrapping my legs around one another to create half lotus I closed my eyes flipped my palms up, and rested the back of my hands on my knees.

rainforest

I start to breathe deeply, in and out of my nose, creating an ocean wave sound and start to direct my thoughts to it.  Thoughts of breakfast, learning how to surf, God, friends/family , connecting with new people, yoga, and then finally the realization that I was really here hit me.  Here I am, accompanied by the rainforest and yet I had my eyes closed, letting the monkey mind take over. I reeled the focus in and gently peered through the slits of my eyes to gaze upon this fortune.  And so I sat for awhile, continuing to breathe intimately with my Creator in this majestic kingdom before me.

Miyakoham

Heaven comes to those who seek it, and those who do will find it has been under their nose the whole time.  Once aligned with this Heaven, the possibilities are endless.  Having the courage to believe in the Unseen will present miracles before your very eyes.  I am an example of this.

Sharing Experiences on the Mat Abroad and Sign Up for EOS: A Costa Rica Yoga Experience !

June 24, 2014 //  by Alana Roach//  Leave a Comment

(Register Here to Join me in Santa Teresa, CR Jan 17-24, 2014)

Yoga and travel have been a true salvation for me in so many ways. 6 years ago I was stepping into my first yoga class, a year later I was practicing 3-5 times a week because of the sheer magic that occurred on the mat. I went from having early signs of arthritis in my knees for almost a year (In my 20’s!) to running a marathon 2 years later after having a regular practice (Without pain and it has never returned). I went from having chronic anxiety and stress to being able to walk through my days unnerved, cool, calm, and collected. As my connection to my higher “Self” grew, my journey on and off of the mat deepened.

This inner journey brought me to an outer experience in the mother land India to live for 3 months in 2011/2012 and it was there that I experienced my first journey abroad. I took the backpacking approach to travel and I did yoga in guest houses and ashrams from Dheli to the Himalayas of Darjeeling. It was there that I absolutely knew I needed to teach and share the beauty of traveling and yoga with you. It was not just a part time thing for me, but it was to become my life’s purpose.

Alana in Rishikesh, India
Alana in Rishikesh, India

My friends, it is this life of yoga and travel that has led me to you. If it were not for these experiences, I wouldn’t be writing you right now. I have experienced an ever expanding knowledge of my purpose here on this earth and in the Universe as a result of my experiences. In order to hear these experiences I needed a moment of stillness. How can we know where to go if we don’t become still enough to hear the silent whisper of Universal Spirit?

I decided to travel abroad long term. I felt this decision to be a huge part of my unfolding Divine purpose. Costa Rica has been in the running of places to move for a few years and when we got the opportunity to check it out to see if we would want to make the leap, we well.. leaped.

I have to tell you my friends, Costa Rica offered me an even deeper sense of my Higher Self’s mission here at this time.

Airplane to Costa Rica!
Airplane to Costa Rica!

When I arrived in Costa Rica I was relieved. The energy in the airport of San Jose was 100 times better of that in any other place I have visited thus far. It felt lighter, calmer; there was less tension in the faces that passed. We stayed a night in San Jose at this beautiful hotel called, “La Grande.” We walked through the small city of San Jose that day and we were amazed at how clean it was, especially in comparison to New Delhi! Holy cow! I had heard from my friend that it was a bit dirty, but I can honestly tell you that after being to one of the most polluted cities in the world (Dheli, and Dheli still has it’s charm despite the smog) this was a walk in paradise. Truly. I believe that you will find if you are traveling outside of the States for the first time, this is a good way to start and ease into things. That evening we dined in the courtyard of our hotel and ate some of the best sea bass I have ever had.

The next day we caught the bus with the other back packers and ex-pats to the ferry. Our luggage was safe below the bus and it was delightful to know that the bus drove right onto the ferry. We got out of the ferry and traveled to the upstairs tier to watch the beautiful sunset over the water. 6 hours later we landed and boarded the bus again and were on our way to Monte Zuma. Monte Zuma is a beautiful, sleepy beach town. It reminded me of summer camp because the hotels were family owned, quaint structures with tin roofs and the bungalows that we stayed (Mangos, Monte Zuma, Costa Rica) in looked like circular tree houses that were arranged about 50 steps away from each other up the side of a hill. If you looked down the hill from our bungalow you could see the Pacific Ocean. The Ocean was as warm as bath water and stays that way all year round. During the, “High season,” also known as, “Dry season,” you don’t need to worry about bugs biting, which was such a blessed as you find yourself outside from morning to night. As the sun set over the Pacific Ocean we watched from the hammocks that are strewn about everywhere along the peninsula. It is truly a sight to see the sun hit the sparkling blue waters of the Pacific. It is something to experience at least once in your life (If not hundreds of times!). Every evening after a long day of hiking to the beautiful water falls in the rain forest and body surfing in the ocean we would saunter over to one of the many great restaurants arranged along the dirt path. Once again, the food was incredible and surprisingly diverse. For breakfast I typically had Huevos Ranchero and coffee and for dinner I’d have authentic Costa Rican food, Italian, Raw Vegan, you name it.

After our week’s stay in Monte Zuma we decided to take a fellow backpacker’s advice and head to a surfer’s paradise called Santa Teresa. About a 45 minute trip in an air conditioned bus ride later we arrived. We spent maybe 5 minutes finding a place to stay with AC and then we were off to check out the surf. I have never surfed before and my boyfriend has but let me tell you, if you like to surf or are even remotely curious, this beach will beckon to you. These waves were the ones of movies and even watching them had an intense healing effect on my mind. For the first couple of minutes I just gazed out at the glistening powerful waters in the shade and then I couldn’t stand it any longer, I had to go in. We lathered on 80 proof sun block and rented some boards for only $8 a piece (Remarkably much cheaper than Monte Zuma which had a deposit necessary for $150-$200 in case of damage!! We opted out there). The reason Santa Teresa is so affordable is because it is home to a lot of surfing lifer’s who don’t have the high budget to spend but need to have a place to crash, good food to stay fit, and a great beach to surf. The waves were powerful here and I stayed mostly near the shore line where there were still powerful enough breaks to surf but definitely better for beginners like me. I watched seasoned surfers carve in 15-20 ft swells further out. Occasionally there would be people riding horses bareback against the wild action of the ocean. It was incredible to experience and watch. We stayed there all day, every day. At night we had a feast. The food was even better here! I was treated to a huge steak of tuna with mashed potatoes for only $9 at Burger Rancheros, a funky outdoor restaurant with candle lit picnic tables and surfer servers. It was awesome. Not only did I fall in love with the surf, food, and people here, but I also fell in love with the funky art scene. There is this cool espresso/break and l unch café called Zwart which is owned by an ExPat artist and has brightly painted canvases and art room in the center of the lounge. I found myself being inspired to paint myself while there. It was truly inspiring to be around so much creative energy that had no objective except to create, live, and enjoy life. What became the icing on the cake was there was this great yoga community here. You were either surfing , doing yoga, eating well, or simply just relaxing here in Santa T. What a gift. I was home.

It was this journey that firmed up our plans to travel long term in Costa Rica. While staying in CR I received and email from True Nature Education’s Joshua Canter. Joshua asked me if I would like to lead a retreat in Costa Rica. Did he hear my thoughts? This was one of the first signs it was to be so. I never contacted him prior to this, it was truly a synchronicity! When we returned home, after much prayer and meditation, we decided to do just that. I set a date for Jan 2015. This would be my first retreat of many. Where else to start this adventure but Santa Teresa! Since making the decision to move to CR we miraculously met someone from the States who has lived in CR for 15 years as a real estate developer. Miraculously he was visiting some family in Maryland and we met him synchronistically 5 minutes away from our house 2 days after he arrived. The guy overheard us talking to a group of people and chimed in as we were about to leave. We since then had dinner a few times and he offered to pick us up from the airport with our luggage and let us crash at his house until we find a house to rent is Santa T. Wow! The Universe is amazing if and when you trust it to be so!. Since then I have received offers to teach from several different people that have randomly taken my classes here in the states These prospective retreats include Belize, Italy, other locations in Costa Rica, South Africa, and Hawaii! This is all within 2 months. I look forward to teaching all over the globe. I want to share these experiences with you. I believe our paths crossed for a reason. This has been my dream and they are coming true. I support your hearts deepest yearning! Your dreams are only a thought away!

I believe that everything happens for a reason. You are receiving this special invitation to become a globe trotter. Our journey starts in Santa Teresa Costa Rica this January 17-24. I am extending our early bird special because I want to save you as much money as possible.   If you sign up before August 1 you will save $300. After that the price will go up. All you need to secure your spot and tuition is $250! We can arrange a payment plan after that which will work with you. If that seems daunting, trust me, I went into making the decision to travel to India and Costa Rica trusting that the funds would miraculously appear. They always have. Whether it’s a special workshop that comes my way or another opportunity to each, the money always materializes if we trust that it will. First it requires my unabashed faith and commitment. The rest works itself out. Yoga and travel have rocked my world, and it is my hope for you that you let it rock yours.

(Register TODAY! to Join me in Santa Teresa, CR Jan 17-24, 2014) Don’t waste another minute. Stop making excuses! Just do it! You will thank yourself later. Airfare is very affordable and if you are willing to travel light (All you need is a bathing suit, a couple of shirts, shorts, sandles, toothbrush and a towel) through Spirit Air if you book now (For as low as 200 round trip). I am not in this for the money , I want you to experience life to it’s fullest and not spend an arm and a leg doing so. I will continue to be here to answer questions and guide you along this journey right up until you board your plane in January!

I love you and support your Highest calling.

Namaste and Pura Vida!!!

Whether or Not to Teach When You Are Sick

June 10, 2014 //  by Alana Roach//  Leave a Comment

IMG_2179How does a yoga teacher or any teacher for that matter know when to call in sick and take some time off to rest and recover?  I say your body will let you know.  Especially you, yogis and yoginis. Practicing what we preach in our own lives can be a tall order to fill. “Take care of your body, and it will take care of you,” is something I spout off in class just about every time I teach but when it came to myself I felt short!  After years upon years of practicing with all different teachers with many different styles of teaching I have seen it time and time again.  Teacher burn out.  It can really take a toll on the mind and body.  You find yourself teaching 20 classes a week, practicing on your “down time,” eating while checking emails, checking emails all hours of the day, go go go until you hit the hay at the end of the day and do it all over the following morning.  Sure, it feels great in the beginning but over time the body starts to break down when it doesn’t get rest.

Just a couple of weeks ago I got that all familiar sinus pressure that tends to occur around Spring every year.  I have a history of sinus allergies, I know what it feels like when something is off balance in my body, and yet I kept going at the speed of a race horse to get “it” all done.  My list of things to do on my schedule did not become shorter while I was on the cusp of being sick, I think I probably even added a few tasks in between classes that I never do to prepare for my big move in August.  “What better time to do these things than RIGHT NOW,” I thought to myself.  So I suffered the consequences because I didn’t listen to my body.  I didn’t slow down.  I landed myself a 100 degree fever, a prescription a 10 day cycle of antibiotics, and a week full of classes to either get covered or not.  Seems like a no-brainer, right??  For some one like me, who absolutely LOVES what they do, and suffers from a little thing called perfectionism from time to time… this can be a large lesson for the ego in self-compassion.  The first few days I was sick it was easy, I literally had no energy to give, so I got my classes covered… Mid week, I still felt pretty awful, but I started to be able to move.  That is when it got tricky.  I start thinking, “Well, I can walk to and from the bathroom without puking, maybe I can teach a class” but meanwhile I can barely eat still, walking to and from the bathroom is extremely fatiguing and I can’t do downward facing dog without everything hurting.  This is insane!  Thank God I am aware of my insanity today and I have a loving partner who backs me up when I need to rest.  So, I took off the whole week.  I knew, from listening to my body, and from my previous experiences that if I didn’t rest now, I would just prolong the time that I would be out.  This lesson has repeated itself for me time and time again and I have started listening the more I grow along my path.  Trust me, your students want you feeling great when you teach them and will sense it if you are neglecting to practice what you preach.  So the next time you think about trudging through with your body falling apart on you, remember what you tell your students, “Listen to your body, honor it, and it will honor you.”

A big part of my practice on and off of the mat is slowing down these days.  A lot of teachers I speak with regularly agree that it is  very difficult to take time to be still.  Even in a life where one of the biggest teachings of yoga is to… be still.  I know that is why I was drawn to yoga in the first place.  It has an uncanny way of getting the mind to be still… now if I could only get my body to follow more often.  This is a journey and I have to remember it is progress and not perfection.  The journey is truly the destination and this is not a race.

Remember you don’t have to prove yourself to anyone because you are already loved completely by the Divine just as you are.  Listen to that still soft voice within that guides you in the direction of love and light.

Sincerely,

Explorations of Self: A Costa Rica Yoga Experience

May 17, 2014 //  by Alana Roach//  Leave a Comment

Starting in Jan. 2015, I will be teach the first of many retreats in Costa Rica. I love being able to experience different cultures while traveling light.  There is something to be said about the “Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy,” all you truly need to bring is a towel and a toothbrush.  I can’t claim that I have traveled with that little, but I like the idea.  The more I travel, the less I bring with me.  It is freedom.  We aquire so much in the material as we grow.  From small items to the large, we become subconciously and sometimes very conciously attached to these things.  Currently I am in the process of slimming down these items.  I am getting back to the basics.  That is a big reason why I like yoga, all you need is an intention to do yoga. Sometimes you might want a mat, but not always.  I think that is why I like the idea of surfing, it’s you, the board, and the ocean.  I pick my activities like I pick my food, the less ingrediants the better.

Here are some ways to get back to the basics:

1. Declutter.  Do you really need that dress you’ve had for the past five years and never wear or that broken printer you’ve been hanging onto in hopes of some day fixing?  I didn’t think so.  Get rid of it! Create a good-will pile, e-bay pile, and a junk pile.  I know sometimes clearing space can feel daunting but the release you will get afterwards is by far greater than any anxious feelings you may have about doing it.

2. Do more yoga.  It’s simple!  Get to your local studio or pop on a youtube video at home.  The more you practice getting into the flow of the present, the more you will instinctively get back to the bare nessecities in life.

3. Local Farmer’s Market.  Buy local, buy often.  When you support local farmers you are supporting a healthier you.  Local raw honey has been known to fight pollen allergies and organic vegetables and fruit hold more nutrients. Plus, how good does a fresh tomato or local raw honey sound right about now?

4. Craft.  Our ancestors used to do it often.  We only do it in grade school unless we take a special interest in basket weaving and continue it into adult-hood.  There is something to be said about creating something with our own hands or feet for that matter.  Check out some of these great ideas for crafting with nature on Pinterest.

5. Only bring 1 back-pack next time you travel. You’ll be happy you did.  Bring the bare minimum.  A toothbrush, a towel, fresh underwear, socks, one change of clothes, and climate dependant gear like sun block, bug spray, scarves, etc.  It’s less to watch, lug around, and worry about period.  I will be hosting a Yoga and Meditation Retreat in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica Jan 17-24, 2015.  I would love it if you came to practice the art of letting go with me in a community setting.  Here is where you can find the details!

Remember, non-attachment comes in stages.  I am definitely still learning to let go, but I can tell you that when I do, I find a new level of awareness that is so incredibly healing to my mind, body, and Soul.

“As spiritual searchers we need to become freer and freer of the attachment to our own smallness in which we get occupied with me-me-me. Pondering on large ideas or standing in front of things which remind us of a vast scale can free us from acquisitiveness and competitiveness and from our likes and dislikes. If we sit with an increasing stillness of the body, and attune our mind to the sky or to the ocean or to the myriad stars at night, or any other indicators of vastness, the mind gradually stills and the heart is filled with quiet joy. Also recalling our own experiences in which we acted generously or with compassion for the simple delight of it without expectation of any gain can give us more confidence in the existence of a deeper goodness from which we may deviate. Meet Alana

Alana’s love for yoga came from firsthand experience with just how powerful the practice is. “In 2009, Yoga found me. Inside the studio, she experienced a deep sense of belonging, but the most profound part was what happened after. “I felt as though I was at true peace. I finally knew what the word meant. Until that moment, I had just understood it cerebrally. There is something profound to be said about Peace dropping into the heart.” Read More
